Joseph R. Delehanty
Joe Delehanty helps businesses prevail in a broad range of business and intellectual property disputes, including employment, fiduciary duty, non-compete, non-disclosure, trade secret, copyright, and trademark claims. He has particular strengths helping companies resolve contentious “business divorces,” as well as challenging Federal and State regulatory matters across a broad range of issues. In all cases, his methodology is the same: work closely with his clients to set and pursue litigation strategies that match their broader business objectives, and then execute on those strategies to achieve their goals. In addition to advising clients on litigation and disputes, Joe also serves as outside counsel for a number of startups and young, innovative companies. A former small-business owner himself, Joe understands the needs and challenges of entrepreneurs and business owners, who appreciate his experience and guidance on balancing long-term strategic objectives with the practical needs of running a business. He helps them structure their corporate entities, hire and terminate employees, negotiate and litigate contracts, resolve founder disputes, and raise the funding they require to remain competitive.
Joe has significant experience helping small and emerging businesses protect their intellectual property. He is equally skilled at both prosecuting his clients’ rights and defending their interests when claims are filed against them. For example, he helped an up-and-coming author assert her copyright against a global publisher and defended trademark and trade secret claims brought against a young hunting equipment manufacturer by a competitor seeking to gain an edge in the market.
Joe is active in the profession and held leadership positions in his native Indianapolis legal community prior to relocating to Chicago. In addition, he is a regular volunteer for Big Brothers Big Sisters. While in college, Joe and his friends developed a unique student volunteer program in partnership with One Laptop Per Child, where they led the fundraising, purchasing, and distribution of more than 200 laptops to communities in rural South Africa.
Joe currently resides with his wife in Lakeview where he specifically chose his apartment because it’s within one block of an outdoor basketball court. He's looking forward to getting to know the city better, one neighborhood brewery at a time.
